  RESEARCH EMPHASIS
  Gene Cloning and Molecular Breeding
In the past years, I had been engaged in plant biotechnology researches and accumulated plenty experiences in tissue culture, plantlet regeneration, somaclonal variant selection, gene identification and genetic transformation of crops including maize, beet, wheat and cotton; and Gramineae foliages of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), common orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), Lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud) and so on. We had established and optimized Agrobacterium-mediated transformation protocols using either calli or multiple buds or shoots in vitro or even the naked meristem of shoot tips in vivo, bypassing the in vitro culture process, as recipients, and genes involved in abiotic stress resistance, sugar or starch metabolic pathways or development and nutrition utilization and so on such as betA, AtNHX1,DREB1A, DREB2A, PIS, PPase,1-fft,1-sst, galE, lgtC, etc, cloned mainly from salt cress, maize, lettuce and yeasts, respectively, were transferred into these materials and transgenic plants and progenies with modified characters were obtained, respectively, to meet the agricultural or horticultural need. Moreover, the transgene expression profile, heredity stability in the progenies and the effects of the transgene expression on the transgenic plants characters were also one of my majors.
  Plant Biological Reactor
Compared to other biological reactors, like microbes and animal cell expression systems, plants have unique advantages. Therefore, transgenic plants as a new biological reactor posses great potentials. Using plant to produce biologically active products, including valuable proteins, carbohydrates for clinical, food and industrial purposes is the goal of our research. Modification of the carbohydrate metabolic pathways in plants using genetic approaches might transform plants into biological reactors to produce valuable oligo-, poly-saccharide and glycoconjugates. Gene involved in carbohydrate metabolic pathways and in starch synthesis pathways have been identified and transferred into tobacco, beet and maize, respectively, and inspiring results have been obtained.
